The British Isles

Welcome to a scenic tour of one of the most beautiful lands in the world. Granted there are quite a few but the British Isles will always hold a special place in my heart. I fell in love with the people, the scenery, the weather and the castles. I look forward to when I can visit again.

I did get carried away with taking pictures and I will try to keep these pages within reasonable sizes but it will be hard not to show them all. I have put them in chronological order and there will be descriptions for some. On others, it may just be that I liked the angle of the sun or a shape caught my eye.  I will include only some of the places we visited to keep this site within reason.

England   The Brae   St. Gile's Church   Entrance to St. Gile's Church
This was my first glimpse of what was to come. England from the air.   This is the first Bed & Breakfast that we stayed at in Edinburgh, Scotland.   St. Giles' Church on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh was breathtaking. The next couple of shots show more detail.   The front entrance archway of St. Giles' Church.
Detail of portico   Edinburgh Castle   Edingburgh Castle   North Wall
Detail of portico and archway of St. Giles' Church. One thing that is amazing is that most of the buildings in the city have some interesting architecture.   I wasn't real impressed with the outside of Edinburgh Castle but the inside was amazing.   Another view of Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh Scotland. As you can tell, the weather was wonderful.   View of Edinburgh from the castle's north wall.

Robert the Bruce

This is a section of the Sir Walter Scott Memorial in Edinburgh.   I think Tammy took as many pictures as I did. One of the first things we did was take a tour of the city in a double-decker bus.   No matter where I looked I saw something beautiful. This was an empty lot along the road near our B&B.   Next we headed North West to Stirling. This is a statue of Robert the Bruce outside of Stirling Castle in Scotland.
City of Stirling Stirling Palace Urquhart Castle Urquhart Castle
A view of the city of Stirling from the castle. Stirling is much smaller than Edinburgh. The palace within Stirling castle. Most castles have had a lot of damage from past wars but enough survived so that we can see the beauty. We drove to Northern Scotland next. This is Urquhart Castle and that is Loch Ness behind it. This was one of the few days that it rained on our trip. We didn't see Nessie. This was one of my favorite castles. I could just imagine the people who used to live there. I could almost hear those long ago voices all around.

Giant catapult   Scottish Highlands   Leigh Langmuir Farm

This shot was taken from the top of the only surviving tower.

There was even an old war machine still around. Even when it was wet and cold, I couldn't get enough of Scotland. This was taken in the Highlands going south again.. One of the places  we stayed in was a farm called Leigh Langmuir in Kilmaur. This old wagon was in the backyard of the farm..
